Why Should You Attend:

U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) is the primary federal agency for enforcing import regulations. However, depending on the commodity imported, the goods may also be subject to the regulations of other federal agencies. Successfully navigating the complexities of all of these laws and regulations can be daunting and if done improperly it may result in penalties, fines or other sanctions.

This CBP compliance webinar will be devoted to exploring the challenges and intricacies of being a compliant importer and then strategies for assuaging those risks. It will explain in detail about establishing a compliance program and culture to meet the requirements and will also discuss best –in-class practices of highly compliant companies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Why is trade compliance important?
  • How do we ensure that our suppliers and vendors meet this requirement?
  • What happens when errors or problems are discovered?

Instructor Profile:

Michael D. Laden, is a recognized expert in the customs compliance and the supply chain regulatory environment. In addition to serving the two-term limit on the COAC (Commercial Operations Advisory Committee), Mr. Laden has served on the Board of Governors for the American Association of Exporters and Importers (AAEI) since 1988, and is a past Chairman. He has been a featured speaker on U.S. Customs and Border Protection and related matters before many national organizations. He travels extensively and has taught the fundamentals of importing to thousands of foreign suppliers and manufacturers worldwide.

Topic Background:

A company importing into the U.S. cannot abdicate or otherwise outsource their obligations to undertake “reasonable care” in their importing practices and activities.

Failure to do so may result in substantial penalties, seizure and in egregious cases of fraud criminal charges. When errors or mistakes occur CBP has three (3) levels of culpability, negligence, gross negligence and fraud. Penalties increase with each level and CBP assess fines on all unliquidated customs entries. Additionally, mistakes damage your company’s all-important reputation and credibility with CBP.
