Why Should You Attend:

CPT and CMS both have routinely made changes to the coding and rules for infusions and injections.

In this session, we will review the latest guidelines CPT offers related to codes based on time, which will apply to the infusion codes. We will also review the most commonly reported injections and when to properly report them.

CMS has a wealth of information on their website that can assist you in receiving the proper reimbursement for, sometimes very expensive, drugs. There will be a thorough review of the files available from CMS that include NDC codes, the average sales pricing, and pricing for drugs not assigned HCPCS codes yet, but reimbursed under unlisted code. The FDA website will also be referenced for approval information, which is critical, because insurance carriers will not normally reimburse for drugs that are not FDA approved.

Areas Covered in the Webinar:

  • Most current CPT coding for infusions from the medicine section.
  • A review of the 2013 CPT update for reporting time based codes.
  • Hierarchy of infusion coding in the office.
  • When to report the initial, subsequent, and concurrent infusion codes.
  • Cheat Sheet for Infusion coding.
  • CPT coding for the most common injections performed in the office.
  • Review of the injection CPT code descriptions to maximize reimbursement.
  • Reporting guidance for needle placement.
  • References for HCPCS updates.
  • A comprehensive review of the CMS Average Sales Price file.
  • Other tips on reporting for administered drugs.

Topic Background:

Any infusion in the office, whether it be therapeutic, diagnostic, prophylactic, or chemotherapy, can be costly to the practice if not all billable services are reported. The CPT codes for infusions allow you to report an administration code for each drug or treatment performed in some way, as well as the drugs administered.

What about when an injection is administered instead of an infusion? There is a wide assortment of injections that can be found in many different sections of the CPT manual, including injections of joints, vaccines, pain management, and radiology procedures. HCPCS codes are utilized to report most of the drugs that are administered by methods other than orally, but you will find vaccines toxoids listed in the CPT manual.
