The food label is one of the most important tools Canadian consumers can use to make informed choices about healthy and safe foods. Canadian food legislation has specific requirements for food manufacturers regarding what to include on a food label and how it should be presented. This course will review the basic requirements of the Canadian Food label, including requirements for the location and size of the common name, net quantity declaration, list of ingredients and allergen labeling, identity and principal place of business, date markings, nutritional labeling, bilingual requirements, irradiation, and sweeteners. For manufacturers of food products for consumption in Canada wishing to ensure compliance to the latest nutritional labeling standard, this course offers an overview of the necessary elements to ensure compliance.

Why Should You Attend:

This course will follow the guidelines set forth in the Guide to Food Labeling and Advertising as set forth by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada and will highlight new regulatory requirements that have recently been implemented.

The course will provide information on both food labeling and advertising requirements as well as policies which apply to statements and claims made for foods and alcoholic beverages and will be a reference of compliance for food manufacturers producing foods to be consumed in Canada. Guidance offered in this course will comply with regulations set forth by the Food and Drugs Act (FDA), Food and Drugs Regulations (FDR), Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act (CPLA), Consumer Packaging and Labeling Regulations (CPLR), and other relevant regulations. At the end of the course, manufacturers will be understand current label requirements and will be able to ensure compliance at their facilities.

Derrick Swint

Derrick Swint's career has been shaped by his floor experience in the food manufacturing industry. Through the course of his career, he has worked several leadership roles in Sanitation, Pest Control, and Environmental Services. His many responsibilities have including coordinating programs such as developing and scheduling the Master Sanitation Program Schedule, SSOP development, scheduling sanitation in SAP, developing and scheduling housekeeping audits, internal audits, corrective/preventive action programming, and CIP administrator. Derrick has extensive years of bakery experience. He has been responsible for implementing many programs internally. Along with assisting with PCQI development, his food safety credentials include Certified Sanitarian, HACCP, Certified CIP Manager and Licensed Pest Control Operator and has additionally obtained certifications in BRC, SQF, and ISO 22000.

Abdesselam Benelmbarek, Director of International Programs, Zoetic Global Consulting, with a master in agro-food engineering, has spent several years in the food industry as HACCP coordinator and quality manager with a wide knowledge and mastery of the HACCP system. Abdesselam’s industry experience spans many references, including PASA, FSSC22000, SQF, ISO 9001 and ISO 22000. In addition to GFSI, over the years he has gained experience in setting up HACCP systems, internal and external audits, training of quality assurance and GMP staff. On top of all this is added knowledge of continuous improvement by participating in the implementation of IL6S as well as training colleagues, RCA, 5W and 12 steps. Abdesselam has several certificates obtained such as HACCP, GFSI Audit and IL6S and certified to give the Work Place Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training and. Mr. Benlembarek is fluent in English, French, and Arabic languages.
