Establishment of ISO 14001:2004

Any organization can establish, implement, maintain and improve its EMS and assure itself of conformity with its stated environmental policy.

Compliance with ISO 14001:2004

At the macro level, all the requirements of the standard are intended to be incorporated into any environmental management system. So, no exclusions can be made, in principle.  Possibly, some requirements do not apply. Thus, if a jurisdiction does not regulate the environment, an organization operating there will have no environmental law to consider while establishing its EMS.

At the micro or organizational level, the extent of application will depend on factors like the environmental policy of the organization, the nature of its activities, products and services and its location.

To apply for an ISO 14001 certification, the organization should:

• make a self-determination and self-declaration, or
• seek confirmation of its conformance from parties having an interest in the organization, such as customers, or
• seek confirmation of its self-declaration from an external party, or
• seek certification/registration of its EMS from an external organization.

Benefits of ISO 14001:2004

It is a tool that can be used to meet internal objectives. It provides assurance to management that it is in control of the organizational processes and activities which have an impact on the environment. Further it assures employees that they are working for an environmentally responsible organization.
